OPC UA adopted AMQP and other pub sub transports with a lightweight binary data model that will compete very well with MQTT and SparkplugB. SparkplugB - not exactly lightweight, right? Those device identifying certs/thumbprints are brutal. IMHO, Linux containers, hybrid applications and hybrid enterprise busses split between cloud and on premise are going to be a significant “next big thing” in addition to the slow decline of traditional thick OSes running local-only services. Users have always had the ability to create what we refer to as user defined tags in their KEPServerEX application.
